Your child's first eye exam: a parent's guide

Roughly one in four school-age children has an undetected vision issue — and many of them are reading the eye chart just fine. The school screening only catches a fraction of what a comprehensive exam reveals.

When to come in

We recommend a first comprehensive exam by age three, then again before kindergarten, and annually after that. Younger if you notice any of the signs below.

Signs to watch for

• Squinting, head tilting, or covering one eye to read or watch

• Holding books or tablets unusually close

• Headaches after schoolwork or screens

• Eye rubbing, frequent blinking, or sensitivity to light

• Avoiding reading or close-up work

What to expect at the visit

We make pediatric exams gentle and game-like. Pictures instead of letters for younger kids, plenty of patience, and exam techniques designed for non-verbal children. Bring a favorite toy if it helps.
