The annual eye exam, and why it matters more than you think

At Partridge Optometry, we approach the annual eye exam as a piece of preventive medicine — not a refraction. A comprehensive exam can surface early signs of glaucoma, diabetes, hypertension, and even certain neurological conditions, often years before any other doctor would notice.

What we look for

A Partridge Optometry exam is unhurried — typically 45 to 60 minutes — and includes a careful history, refraction, binocular vision assessment, intraocular pressure, and detailed evaluation of the front and back of the eye. We use modern digital retinal imaging and OCT scanning to document the health of your eyes year over year.

How often you should come in

For most adults with no risk factors, an annual exam is the right cadence. If you have diabetes, a strong family history of glaucoma or macular degeneration, or wear contact lenses, you may need more frequent monitoring. Children should have their first comprehensive exam by age three — and any time you notice squinting, head tilting, or trouble reading.

• Your current glasses and any backup pairs

• Your contact lens information (brand, prescription, and recent supply)

• Your insurance card

• A list of any medications you take
